Aged 17, Karrie left her family to pursue a first-class education beyond the Hong Kong education system. Karrie’s achieved the equivalent of three masters degrees, including 1st class integrated bachelor/masters in Maths with Modern Applications from University of York (UoY). Since graduating Karrie has applied her skills in the healthcare and life sciences industries, as a healthcare analytics consultant. Her 12 years’ experience focuses on adding transformational value to staff and service users by leveraging real-world data assets. Using analytic techniques and technology, Karrie builds Artificial Intelligence and applies machine learning to problems – for example predicting treatment pathways for patients and NHS usage. At IQVIA, Karrie worked in a team developing a mobile application to help patients digitally record how they feel and share data with healthcare professionals.
Karrie’s passion for applying mathematics and technology, , correctly, to reveal data insights and tell stories extends beyond the workplace. Her volunteering includes:
- Speaker of Leeds data thing to promoting the use of ethnicity dataset
- Winner of the top 100 women in technology in 2019
- Trustee and council member at The Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA);
- Chair of Early Career Mathematicians Committee;
- Diversity team of IMA and revise the content of the IMA website pages
- Chaired three national industry conferences – November 2018 at UCL, March 2019 at Lancaster, November 2019 at Bath
- volunteered at New Scientist Live in 2018 and 2019
- Advisor for Mathematics department at UoY;
- Analytical advisor for India’s WaterHarvest charity – use her mathematical expertise since August 2019. She provides statistical support for clean water programmes in Rajasthan, using data science and technology to improve the design and optimise the resources needed to implement systems.
As the aim of the programmes is for people’s lives to improve because of having clean water close to their home. Therefore, the impact are categorised the following as objective indicators:
- Girls going to school (no longer going to fetch water so have time to go to school)
- Spending money on water (spending money on water means less money to spend on other things)
- Walking to get water (time spend fetching water could be spent with family or earning money)
- Prevalence of illness (better health means better productivity etc and also potentially less money on visiting doctors)
- Mentor and diverse role model at the award-winning social enterprise STEMettes.
- Podcast for “Science Council” and “My Career Story”
- Interviewee for Women in Data #WiDWeek2020
Resulting in national recognitions:
- Chartered mathematician
- Scholarship awarded by the IMA – for promoting maths and it’s uses in business and life
