About Me:
Hi I’m Tom! I live in Tokyo, and enjoy travelling and seeing new places, meeting new people, and finding new animals. I play football, watch basketball, and love cooking and eating in equal measure.

I enjoy visiting gardens, and other natural sights. The more trees and rivers the better. There are lots of nice gardens and forests to see in Japan. They even have bears! I also play football regularly with a 6-a-side football team, and like to cook and have dinner with my friends. They are from all over the world, so have taught me lots of new recipes.

My Work:
I am a mathematical biologist. I use maths and computer simulations to try and understand animals and plants with unusual genetic and sexual systems.

I develop mathematical models to understand how evolution works in different genetic systems. Each of us contains genes which have different inheritance patterns. For example, mitochondria (“the powerhouse of the cell”) has its own genome, but we only ever inherit this from our mothers. In contrast, for most of our genes we get one copy from our mum and one from our dad. There are very many species with very different systems to ours! Ants, wasps and bees, lay unfertilised eggs which become males, and fertilised eggs which become females. So males have only one copy of every gene, but females have two! I develop mathematical models to try and understand what the consequences of these differences will be for evolution.

My Typical Day:
I wake up, make some coffee and have a bowl of cereal. I walk to work and arrive about 9am. A normal day involves reading scientific papers, writing some maths, drawing some diagrams and making some figures. I have lunch with my friends in our canteen, and then I normally leave work about 6pm.

In my work I’ll typically spend some time reading previous mathematical models people have created and solved. Or instead sometimes I will read papers where people have described some unusual genetics of a particular animal, plant, or fungus. I think how this information can be useful for the questions that I would like to answer. I might then spend some time trying to work out how to write equations to describe a particular process, or write some code in order to simulate that scenario. I really enjoy making figures and diagrams to describe my results. I also might spend some time writing up my results, or preparing presentations to describe them to other people.

What I'd do with the prize money:
I would like to work with an artist to try and bring of these different inheritance systems to life, and create a series of simple, but interactive simulations, so that people can simulate some basic evolutionary processes in different animal and plant genetic systems.
-
Education:
I went to school at Norton Knatchbull in Ashford. There I studied the IB, and then went to University at Cambridge, where I studied Genetics. I then went to Scotland, were I studied my PhD in Evolutionary Genetics. I then moved to Japan to work as a Postdoc.
-
Qualifications:
GCSE’s: 12 A*s, 1 A
IB: 42: Higher: Biology (7), Chemistry (7), Spanish (6), Philosophy (6), Standard: Maths (7), English (7)
BA: Natural Sciences (Genetics) 1st
MSci: Natural Sciences (Systems Biology) 1st
PhD: Theoretical Evolutionary Genetics – “Conflicts and trade-offs in relation to sex”
-
Work History:
I worked in a call centre doing surveys, and also did tutoring for Maths and English. I also worked in a lab over the summer at University counting fly eggs. When I was doing my PhD I worked as a demonstrator helping out in various labs. I also set and marked essays, and gave some lectures on evolutionary biology.
I then worked as a postdoctoral researcher in St Andrews, before moving to Japan.

Current Job:
I currently work as a Postdoctoral Researcher in Japan.
