It takes quite a long time to get to my position with a combination of education and on the job learning but there are lots of different routes to get there. The most straightforward is by doing A-levels following by a degree and then getting a place on the NHS Scientist Training Programme. But there are routes opening up via apprenticeships. I have friends who have done all kinds of different jobs before and between working as a clinical scientist. So many of the skills of scientists and mathematicians are transferrable to lots of different things.
