It is a source of comfort to me because I see it as a giant toolbox that I can use to solve nearly every problem I will encounter. The subject is of course very logical but there is also a lot of beauty in it and it is deeply creative. There is a book by Simon Singh that explains how they solved Fermat’s Last Theorem and it is really interesting to read about the journal through different branches of mathematics they took to solve it.
There is also a tv programme that was on in the 2000’s called Numb3rs (yes, that is how you spell it) and it is about two brothers, one is an FBI agent, the other is a professor of maths and they work together to use maths to solve crime. It is a tv show so the practical demonstration is not that realistic but the maths behind it is real.
