In my spare time I do a bit of gardening to grow food for my Guinea Pigs. I also enjoy photography too, including editing the images myself to create weird and wonderful effects!

To be honest, I’m actually a pretty quiet person – I like to just relax surrounded by peace and quiet to read a book or listen to an audiobook.
But, when I need to (like at work), I am good at figuring out how to get the best out of people and helping people to work as a team.

My Work:
I look after the design and construction of water treatment works, sewage treatment works and water pipelines.

I, with a huge range of scientists and engineers, make sure that clean, safe drinking water is always available. We also make sure that the dirty water we produce is treated before being returned to the environment that we took the water from.
To do this we need to understand scientific ideas, then use these ideas to create (“engineer”) the pipelines buried under our feet and the other water facilities that are hidden throughout every village, town and city.

My Typical Day:
I normally work from 8am until 4pm but what happens in that time is different every day! But everything I do is either to make dirty water clean, make drinking water cleaner or move water around.

Sometimes I will do some sketching of some new water treatment system, sometimes I will be on a construction site talking to the builders about where something needs to be built and sometimes I also have to go and take a look at something that has gone wrong, and figure out how to fix it – like a big burst pipe in the middle of a road!

What I'd do with the prize money:
I like taking people outside and showing people what hidden engineering there is everywhere around us – so something like that!

Education:
I went to school in small village near Redditch and Bromsgrove, in Worcestershire.

Qualifications:
GSCEs in Maths, English, Sciences and few others
A Levels in Maths, Physics, Geography and Biology
Master of Engineering (MEng) degree in Civil Engineering

Work History:
Before becoming an engineer, I did lots of different bits of work – in a clothes shop, in a restaurant, as a video camera operator, a photographer and other bits and pieces.
My first engineering jobs were for large engineering design companies, as a design engineer working on similar things to what I do now – water and sewage treatment works.
I am now more of a manager – I help other engineers figure out what they need to do and how to do it.
