I would say that maths plays a very important role in the creation of medicine. I work in the area of clinical trials (experiments), where potential new medicines are tested on humans to see if they work and are safe. In order to do this we make use of statistics which is one area of mathematics. We have to design the trial to make sure that we collect suitable data to answer the questions being asked. Once designed and run the data need to be analysed with the results providing evidence as to if the medicine can be used by people. There are many stages of medicine development using clinical trials, usually starting with healthy volunteers before moving to large trials in patients. Statisical design and analysis is a key part of successfully running these trials.
I strongly suspect that maths is also used prior to testing medicines on humans, as part of finding possible new medicines, but that is not an area I work in.
Of course there are many other very important scientific skills that are needed to create medicines, inclduing bioloigy and chemistry. This is one of the excting parts of the job. Lots of people with different skills working together as a team.
